The Chromatic Scale

The Chromatic scale is a series of twelve notes, each one is a half step, also known as a Semitone, apart. A half step is the shortest distance you will move on your guitar fretboard, it is simply moving from one fret to the very next fret beside it.

There are several ways to play a Chromatic scale, which is covered in detail on the GUITAR MEMBERS.COM website tuition videos, but the easiest way to play a Chromatic scale is like this.

Play the first string (the thinnest string) open (no finger holding down the string) you then play the same string at the first fret, then the same string at the second fret, staying on the same string play at the third fret, then the forth fret, then the fifth, sixth, seventh etc, all the way up the fretboard until you reach fret twelve.

Congratulations, you have just played a Chromatic scale. Now do the same on all six strings, and play them all descending as well (fret twelve all the way back down).

Never underestimate the power of practice it has made you who you are. (or maybe who you aren't ... yet :-)

Happy practicing.
